Welcome to Alto Piemonte, where the Sesia River winds through the hills, Lago Maggiore shimmers on the horizon, and little towns like Biella, Borgomanero and Vercelli keep their secrets close. Once Italy’s Nebbiolo heartland, this region was swallowed by forest after phylloxera and the pull of city factories — but slowly, stubbornly, it clawed its way back. Today a new generation of growers has returned to those steep terraced hillsides, and the sommeliers of the world are finally paying attention.
