DESCRIPTION:Join Andrew Marks from Gembrook Hill this Saturday on a tasting. \nIn 1983\, Ian and June Marks ended a long search through almost every wine region in Victoria when they found their vineyard site. It has views of Mt Donna Buang\, the Warburton ranges as a backdrop\, red soil and a coveted north-easterly aspect. Gembrook Hill was part of the “second wave” of Yarra Valley vignerons and is now one of the oldest vineyards in the Upper Yarra sub-region. \nThe wines are crafted with an old-world mindset and are regarded as some of the most outstanding examples of their variety in Australia. Most of the vines are now over twenty years old. The chardonnay was a pacesetter for the Yarra Valley\, restrained yet complex. The sauvignon blanc\, recently awarded Halliday’s Best Sauvignon Blanc\, carries characteristics found in Sancerre and is more austere than typical Australian and New Zealand examples. DESCRIPTION:One of the few great appellations of the world that is still approachable for young vignerons\, the Terrasses du Larzac is about 45 minutes northwest of Montpellier in the Languedoc. The rugged\, dry\, windy lands are home to many legendary producers–Mas de Daumas Gassac and Grange des Pères to name a few. It is here the Barons staked their claim after working at Domaine Trevallon\, Sylvain Pataille and Domaine de la Pousse D Or \,  they acquired 25 acres of vineyards and produced their first vintage in 2014. \nThe location of each vineyard and how each was planted were carefully analyzed and selected by the very exacting Guillaume. The Syrah and Grenache are from the Combariolles\, where the nights are cold and the soil rocky\, producing very perfumed Côte-Rôtie-like wines. The Cinsault\, Carignan and some Grenache are grown on one of the best terroirs in Montpeyroux\, called La Barthassade. Here\, the sun-drenched terraces still see a lot of rain\, and the combination of heat and water allows the grapes to reach perfect maturity. The Chenin and Roussanne are planted in St. Saturnin\, just west of Aniane\, and produce the estate’s one lovely white. \nNothing is left to luck here: the vineyards are cultivated with biodynamic practices; concrete eggs\, temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and old barrels are used in the cellar; and the wines are moved only by gravity. Guillaume takes the unusual step–rare for Languedoc–of using 50 to 80 percent whole cluster\, depending on the cuvee\, which imparts very unique character to the wines. The results are extremely impressive\, with every wine speaking clearly of its origin with elegance\, balance and purity of fruit. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday\, Zac will be pouring Warramate and Yarra Yering at our weekly public tasting. \nWarramate\, from the Yarra Valley\, has just released five new wines under a full rebrand that sets it apart from its older sibling\, Yarra Yering. The two estates started separately\, in 1969 and 1970\, and have shared an owner since 2011. Andrew George manages both vineyards\, and Sarah Crowe makes the wines for both labels.
