Domaine Joblot
Givry “Clos Marole”
1er Cru Red barrel
Score: 89-91
Tasted: Oct 10, 2021
Drink: 2026+
Issue: 84
Producer note: Juliette Joblot directs this 14 ha domaine where the plantings are divided between 11 ha in pinot noir and 3 ha in chardonnay. Though she was away at the time of my visit, I was told that the 2020 vintage was tiny as it yielded no more than 30 hl/ha for the reds, not much in the context of the appellation, though they were better for the whites. The fruit was picked beginning on the 19th of August and required very little sorting. Potential alcohols came in between 13.5 to 14% with surprisingly low pHs. The reds were raised in new wood that averages 45% while the whites average 50%. I would note that the wines had not been racked so they were reduced or carrying secondary fermentation aromas. Tasting note: Deep ruby color. The nose is firmly reduced though there is good freshness to the velvety and round middle weight flavors that possess solid depth and persistence on the finish where a hint of warmth appears. This is a bit awkward but should clean up once it’s racked.
