Description
Sourced from the upper slopes of a stony, clay-calcaire hillside with ideal south-east exposure, Les Murgers Mercurey Rouge is a striking expression of its terroir. In the glass, it shows a deep ruby hue with garnet reflections.
The nose is immediately captivating—spiced red berries layered with hints of freshly tilled earth. On the palate, vibrant notes of wild strawberry, raspberry, and cherry are elegantly dusted with baking spice. This wine is beautifully balanced, marrying delicate acidity with a refined tannic structure. The finish is impressively long and deep, leaving a lasting impression of both finesse and complexity.
The roots of Domaine de l’Évêché stretch deep into Burgundy’s past. The property has been cultivated since the Middle Ages, and was acquired by Jean Baudot in 1936. Baudot initially replaced the vines with fruit trees, building a thriving orchard business. With no heir to continue his legacy, he passed the estate to a passionate young winemaker, Henri Joussier, who replanted the vineyards and released the domaine’s first bottling in 1959.
Vincent joined his father Henri in 1985, further expanding the domaine’s holdings and rejuvenating the Chardonnay and Aligoté vines—varietals that now express themselves beautifully on the stony soils of the “Reviller” appellation. The family’s commitment to excellence continued, with notable expansions in Mercurey (“Les Ormeaux” in 1990 and “Murgers” in 1998). In 2018, their son Quentin joined the domaine, ushering in a new era with modern renovations and renewed energy.
Today, Domaine de l’Évêché spans 35 acres, lovingly tended by Quentin, Sylvie, and Vincent—a testament to the family’s enduring passion for Burgundy’s terroir.
