2021 Domaine Du Collier Saumur Blanc La Charpentrie
Always an incredible wine, this is produced from an old vine parcel (>100 years) in the lieu-dit of ‘La Charpentrie’ in Brézé. Deeper and more sombre than the wine above always with a fine precision. Thrilling, complex scents of lime, flowers and pineapple give way brightly citric, concentrated palate, underpinned by chalky, mineral elements. This has more power and tension than the Saumur Blanc (if that is even possible!) – it is simply a wine for the ages. This rare bottling is one of the great white wines of France
The 2021 Saumur Blanc La Charpentrie is one of the white wines of the vintage in Saumur, offering up aromas of lemon oil, spices, hazelnuts, honey, herbs and ripe orchard fruits. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and precise, it’s crystalline, seamless and perfectly iodine, framed with a fleshy core of fruit and highlighted by the vintage’s signature tension. The saline, iodine finish is gorgeous. Kudos!
2021 Chateau Yvonne Saumur Chenin Blanc Les 2 Arbres
Lobenberg: A new single vineyard from Ch. Yvonne, the 2021 is the first vintage and unfortunately a small one due to the frost. Matured as always in barriques, mostly used, around a quarter new. In addition to Le Gory, which is the Domaine’s strongest white wine, Les Arbres is more of a Riesling type, more chiseled, racy and more acidic. Highly mineral scent with flint and white peach, also white pepper and quince peel. Very polished, stony, more austere in expression than Le Gory. As a Riesling fan, I really appreciate Les Arbres, even if Le Gory has a bit more substance and is probably ahead in the long term. 95-96+/100
2021 Chateau Yvonne Saumur Chenin Blanc Le Gory
As part of a long term vision to develop premier cru vineyards in Saumur, Mathieu Vallée introduced two single-vineyard wines – Le Beaumeray (red) and Le Gory (white). Le Gory comes from a single tiny parcel planted by Françoise Foucault in 1999. Le Gory has a unique blend of deep red clay and tuffeau, and beautifully shows off the best terroir of “La Côte”.
100% Chenin Blanc. Biodynamically farmed and certified organic. From 3 hectares of vines ranging from 5 years to over 80 years in age. Clay/limestone soils over tuffeau stone. Hand-harvested in small bins. Native yeast fermentation in barrel at cool temperatures for 4 months. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally during aging in oak (30% new barrels for 12 months). Bottled unfined and un filtered. Very Limited
