A deep and very complex wine for this appellation. There’s plenty of tannic power, but the tannins are already so polished. Great concentration on the middle of the medium- to full-bodied palate. Very long, graceful finish with a wealth of spices, blueberries and summer flowers. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2027. (SP) 96 Points James Suckling

2021 Julien Pilon Cornas L Elegance Du Caillou

This Syrah is deep and concentrated, with a nose brimming with expressive fruit. The palate is fresh and rounded, delivering both vibrancy and elegance.

Julien Pilon, based in Chavanay in the heart of the Northern Rhône’s Condrieu region, has been crafting wines since 2010. His focus on small-scale, precise winemaking brings out the best in classic Rhône varietals—Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, and Syrah. Trained alongside renowned figures such as Yves Cuilleron and Olivier Decelle, Julien’s journey spans the Rhône, Roussillon, and Spain, culminating in a return to his roots. Starting with no land or cellar, he vinified his first wines in his parents’ garage and has since grown his estate, building his own winery in 2020. Each wine is a true expression of its terroir, balancing concentration with finesse.
