Description

Cioran was created in 2006 when the Gallets isolated three barrels of white that had taken an oxidative turn. They decided to let them do their thing without forcing them. Over time, they developed flor, and the domaine’s ‘rancio’ was born.

Aromatically, we are very much in the realm of sous voile Jura wines. But the low pH’s, schists, and the Gallets’ tendency to include north-facing terroirs, bring a lot of freshness, salinity, and grace to Cioran.

• Name: Cioran is both an anagram of ‘rancio’, the name for oxidatively aged wines in the south of France, and a reference to author and philosopher Emil Cioran.
• Varieties: Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Macabeu
• Vine Age: 40 to 100 years old
• Terroir: Schists
• Viticulture: Organic (certified, practicing since 2008) and biodynamic (certified, practicing since 2011)
• Vinification: Aged for 5 to 6 years in older Burgundian barrels.
