96+ Points, Tip Top Tipple – Gary Walsh (TWF) – “Yes! This wine has it all. All the good things about Castiglione from a great vintage. Red fruits, rose and mint, laden with exotic spice, peanut shells, wet stones and blonde tobacco. It’s bright, succulent red fruits, light on its feet, but not without impact and rare quality. Cold tea, fine dusty and stony tannin, long and firm on a finish of superb length. Best since 2016, and maybe even better. You could pay twice as much for a wine from this vineyard at this quality level, yet Monchiero, bless them, are keeping it real.”
96 Points, Kerin O’Keefe – “The Monchiero 2021 Rocche di Castiglione from Monchiero is a stunner, starting with its beautiful aromatics of wild rose, forest floor, red berry, tobacco and new leather. Showing great structure and finesse, the vibrant palate delivers strawberry, Morello cherry, star anise, white pepper and crushed mint before a truffle close. It’s still young and primary and will benefit with more bottle age. Consistently turning out excellent wines vintage after vintage, it’s a mystery to me why this estate flies under the radar for many Barolo lovers”. Drink 2031–2041. Abv: 14%
96 Points, 5 Stars – The Real Review (Stephen Blandford for Huon Hooke) – “Bright ruby colour. A floral perfume of violets and rosewater, is joined by vibrant red berry fruit scents, mint, delicate cinnamon or mace spice and a crushed rock minerality. There’s a wonderful concentration of fruit on the palate, berries and blood orange, a stony feel and velour tannins providing the architecture, the finish long and spice accented. Subtle power and depth, finesse and balance.” Drink 2025-2042
